Your garden - battlefield or haven?
I recently gave a talk to the local Federation of Small Businessed entitled “Battlefields and Havens”. This was to flag up some of the issues of owning a garden - it can be very rewarding, but occasionally a battleground.
The talk covered a lot of the legal and practical issues concerning gardens, neighbours and nuisance. Did you know, for example, that of the 6 million complaints about nuisance neighbours to Environmental Health Departments, 50% of the complaints are about gardens?
My talk covered:
- Tree Protection Orders (TPOs)
- Problem roots
- New trees and new build (and BS5837:2005)
- Hedges - what makes a 'tall hedge' and what are 'remedial notices'
- Boundary fences and walls
- Planning issues and amenity land
- Sheds and home-office buildings
- Sustainable urban drainage
These were illustrated with case studies.

Expanded landscaping services
